Another lapland photo

This is me, (I never realised how big my nose looks in profile) tobogganing in Saariselka. We booked this as ‘downhill sliding’ and I expected to be going in huge infatables but it turned out to be ordinary sledges. This was absolutely fine as the run you slide down is 1.2 km long and a sledge is slightly more controllable.

At the bottom they have a sort of bar made out of snow and a fire going where they’re making hot blackcurrant juice. Just lovely, though some of our party wanted something a little stronger but we did have to go back and ‘work’ in the evening.

The bus took us back up to the top and off we went again and again…

The temperature was only about -5 then, we were told it was a heatwave as normally it would be -15 or so. Still, my face was stinging from the ice thrown up by my feet as I went screaming down. They said the record speed was clocked at 90 km/h in icy conditions.  Now I’m far too cowardly for that sort of thing but it sure felt fast. It was so funny seeing little kids zooming past me, laughing, while I’m screeching my way along relatively sedately and terrified – that’s how I ski too.

My OH and Child A are away skiing at Glencoe today, where it’s snowing. Child B and I are staying home nursing sore throats and scoffing choccy.

  1. looks like fun! I have to say i am glad we don’t have that much snow here!

  2. I know it’s been said before but they can cope with the snow so well, where we grind to a halt after after half an inch has fallen! Also when you wear the right gear – it’s fine! We hired these huge arctic suits which kept you toastie.
