I claim to be obsessed with gardening but there’s not been much evidence on this blog so far. So here’s a favourite plant, Cotoneaster horizontalis.
It’s a common enough plant but I love the way the stems are held in such a flat plane and it does a good job of covering low walls. Here it’s covering an ugly part of my house where a garage door was converted into a window and the bricks and pointing don’t quite match.
This particular cotoneaster is a cutting from a plant that I bought from the sad section of the garden centre. I’m always drawn to the sad plants, in the same way that other people are drawn to animal rescue centres. If I can buy a plant for 50p that’s nearly dead and nurture it back to health, then I’m over the moon. In fact most of the vegetation in my garden is from the sad section or reduced or from cuttings and seeds. There are only a few things that I’ll pay full price for – when something catches my eye and I absolutely must have it but I try not to give in to temptation too much.
